Working in the great outdoors | Life on a 6-month marketing placement

Here's how interning as a Marketing Assistant at Land & Wave has made me rethink what I need for a happy work-life balance

My history with the outdoors

Hi there! My name’s Connor, and I’m thrilled to be interning as a Marketing Assistant for Land & Wave. As a child, I’d always had a passion for the great outdoors. I can remember countless days spent exploring the woods and fields near my house, and I’ve always loved the feeling of fresh air on my face and the sun on my skin.

But when it came time to choose a career path, I wasn’t sure how to make my love for the outdoors a reality. I didn’t think there were many opportunities for someone with my skills and interests, so I ended up studying marketing in University. I figured it was a safe and practical choice that would give me a solid foundation for a successful career.

Me outdoors

But now that I’m interning at Land & Wave, I’m realizing that there are so many ways to combine my passion for the outdoors with my business skills. Outdoor companies like Land & Wave need all kinds of professionals to function, from sales and finance to marketing and beyond. So no matter what your background is, there’s always a way to make it work in the outdoors.

For me, marketing was my way in. I never would have imagined that I’d be going for sea swims as part of my marketing degree, but here I am, loving every minute of it. This internship has opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities, and I’m so excited to explore them. The outdoors is full of endless opportunities, and I can’t wait to see where my passion and skills will take me.

I just wanted to tell you how much I’m loving my job at Land & Wave. It’s been such a great experience, and I’ve learned so much about how a business works. Plus, the team is like family and the company’s focus on avoiding the corporate lifestyle is right up my alley. I’ve been able to get a really hands-on experience with marketing, which has been amazing.

What I’ve been up to?

One of the coolest things for me has been being part of some of the campaigns. For example, I was really excited to be part of the “Make the Outdoors your Office” campaign. We used a corporate suit on the water to create a really unique and eye-catching ad. It was so cool to have creative input on that and then watch it all come together. Overall, I feel like I’ve found the perfect fit at Land & Wave and am really enjoying my work.

What’s my favourite thing to do ?

So, my favourite thing to do is coasteering. I’ve been able to go on some amazing sessions with a GoPro and camera, and it’s been so much fun. It’s challenging, but also really rewarding. There’s nothing quite like coming back to the office after a couple of hours of battling waves and seeing the amazing footage we captured.

Before this placement, I had only been coasteering once, but now I’m hooked. I’m definitely going to be doing it a lot more in the future.

What is it like working outdoors?

Working outdoors has been a real breath of fresh air for me. I’ve always been an outdoorsy person, and after spending my second year of university stuck in lecture after lecture, it’s been amazing to finally be outside and doing something I love. Every day is something new, and I rarely spend the whole week behind a desk, which is the best thing ever. One day I might be coasteering in Swanage, and the next day I might be making fires in the woods. It’s so much fun, and I get to collect content for the company at the same time.

But it’s not just the fun experiences that have made this placement so great. Being outside all the time has also been really good for my mental health. Who doesn’t love cold-water swimming in November, right?

Would I recommend a placement in the outdoors?

So, would I recommend a placement in the outdoors? Absolutely! These past few months have been some of the best of my working life, and I’ve made so many amazing memories with a great group of people. If you’re currently at university, love the outdoors, and don’t want to work for a big corporate company, then a placement in the outdoors is definitely worth considering. It doesn’t matter what you’re studying, there are always ways to work outside, and I would highly recommend it. After all, they say if you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life, and I definitely love my job!
