The long term management of a staff team full of intelligent, independent minded, enthusiastic people.
Attention to detail – seeing things that aren’t good enough and making rapid improvements. You’ll have full autonomy in this role.
A pragmatic and objective approach to identifying what we’re not good at and the intelligence and ability to create structural and cultural change to do something about it.
Understanding the fundamentals of running an outdoor business; the costs, the pinch points, the logistics and the welfare of a strong team.
Honesty, loyalty, hard work, compassion.
Essential qualifications and experience
- 3+ year’s management experience within the outdoor and adventure sector (or something really similar).
- Varied professional experience (companies/ organisations/ roles).
- Decent levels of competence using IT and communications equipment, systems and software.
- Experience of recruitment and performance management.
- You’ll need to be excellent with people and be very good at empathy and kindness.
- Management ability, energy and flare is what’s most important
This stuff would be useful (but it’s not essential)
- One or some, high level, outdoor qualifications (e.g RCDI or higher, Paddlesport Qualification Provider, Teaching qualification, NCC Coasteering Guide)
- D1 minibus license
- A degree (or higher) in an interesting and appropriate subject
The role
As an Adventure Manager we’ll pay you £32,000 + profit share bonus.
This is a senior management role. You’ll report to the Directors and help manage a team of Lead Instructors.
You’ll be based in Swanage in Dorset most of the time.
You’ll spend some of your time out in the landscape; training staff, working with clients and improving what we do.
You’ll spend some of your time at HQ; programming, staffing and developing systems.
Land & Wave
During the summer, we provide school residential’s that normally run Monday – Friday. A ‘normal’ busy week would be around 6 school groups camping with us (approx. 250 children).
At weekends we’re busy with coasteering, bushcraft and paddle-sports for groups of adults.
During the school holidays we provide DofE Gold Residentials, Kids Adventure Clubs and Activity Days.
We’re very busy with DofE Expeditions March – October.
During the Winter we train outdoor instructors.
We have a full time staff team of 16 people. We employ around 30 extra seasonal staff between March and November.
