Outdoor Instructor Training 2023/24 Week 1

Week 1 of Outdoor Instructor Training course sees the trainees completing their Outdoor First Aid and NWSMP Awards

Over the next 15 weeks, we’ll be keeping you up to date with everything that has been going on with our Outdoor Instructor training course.

This year marks 11 years of us running our Outdoor Instructor Training course and every year our Full Time team can’t wait to start coaching the next cohort of budding instructors.

We have 22 trainees taking part in this year’s course: sixteen full 15-week trainees, three 7-week trainees and three apprentices.

Arrival Day

All the trainees arrived on Sunday 29th for a warm welcome from Course Director Paul Taylor and his huge pile of kit.

After finding their rooms the trainees came to collect their kit packages.

As part of the course, the trainees get a mega kit package which sets them up for the course and their new career in the outdoors.

The kit package includes items like a Drysuit, Wetsuit, Climbing Harness and lots more.

You can find out more about the kit package below in our YouTube video which goes into more detail and explains the crazy discount you get on the kit too.

Day 1 of Instructor Training

The first day of the course is all team building, goal setting, setting expectations and creating the Trainee Pledge.

This is the perfect time to work out why people are taking part in the Outdoor Instructor Training course and the journeys they have taken to begin the course.

Everyone’s reason for doing the course is different and it is great to hear why they are taking part in the course.

We took this opportunity to sit down individually with the trainees to ask them a few questions to find out more about them.

Amber is completing the course this year, hear her reasons below.

Day 2, 3, 4 & 5

Over the next 4 days of the course, the trainees get split into 2 groups. Half completing their NWSMP and Outdoor First Aid whilst the other half Completed their Outdoor First Aid and then their NWSMP.

We complete both of these qualifications in the first week as they are used throughout the whole of the 15-week Outdoor Instructor Training course.

Outdoor First Aid is a great course which ensures that everyone can handle emergency situations with confidence and effectiveness, especially when professional medical help isn’t readily accessible.

This means heading out onto the hills, bringing out the fake blood and recreating some scenarios for the trainees to deal with.

We complete the NWSMP to give the trainees the essential knowledge and skills to enable them to make informed decisions about water safety management.

It looks at both Inland and Coastal waterways, their specific risks and how to perform dynamic risk assessments.
