Sunday saw the launch of Land & Wave’s Rookie Lifeguard training workshops for kids at Sandbanks, Poole.
Sixteen children joined trainers David and Owen, for a day of fun and discovery on Sandbanks Beach.
These beach-based sessions are aimed at local Poole & Bournemouth children aged 8-14 who are keen to learn new skills and be safe at the beach. They cost just £1 per child, to encourage as many parents to sign their kids up as possible.
Rookie Lifeguard trainer, David Mutton said, “It’s great to be able to offer something back to locals. For us, the beach is such an integral part of our lives, so it’s important we equip our children with the essential skills to be able to protect themselves and enjoy the water safely.”
Rookie Lifeguard Training
‘Rookie Lifeguard’ is a national programme accredited by the Royal Life Saving Society. It’s designed to help children be aware of the dangers around water and how to protect themselves and others.
The training session took place at Land & Wave Sandbanks, and involved exercises in identifying coastal dangers, being able to spot rescue aids within the vicinity, and perform rescue techniques for themselves and others.
The children also had a great time chatting to the Lifeguards on Sandbanks beach and finding out more about their jobs and training.
The training finished up with the kids receiving a certificate of achievement, rewarding all their hard work and newfound confidence.
“It’s been a brilliant day. The kids loved it and so did we. It’s a really worthwhile thing that we’re doing here. Making kids safe in the water is what it’s all about.”
Land & Wave plans to launch more dates throughout the Summer. Keep your eyes peeled on the Land & Wave Facebook page for future dates.
