Learning Outside the Classroom and Removing Barriers

Government thinks there are five main barriers to learning outside the classroom (LOtC). Land & Wave can remove these barriers. We want schools to offer new adventure residentials, giving their pupils the chance to display independence, resilience and spend more time outside in the great outdoors.

Removing Barriers to Learning Outside the Classroom

Government thinks there are five main barriers to learning outside the classroom (LOtC)…

  • Risk & Bureaucracy
  • Teacher Training
  • Schools
  • Cost
  • Operators

Land & Wave can remove these barriers.

We want to encourage schools that don’t go on trips to be able to offer new adventure residentials to their pupils. Giving them the chance to display independence, resilience and spend more time outside in the great outdoors.

Risk & Bureaucracy

“…many schools cite the fear of accidents and the possibility of litigation as one of the main reasons for the apparent decline in school trips…”

Land & Wave has a policy of transparency, with all risk assessments, insurance documents and accreditations available online, all our accident trends and statistics are also available by request.

Land & Wave are excellent at staff training and employing a team that all hold national qualifications. Additionally, all our instructors are first aiders, and have the relevant water rescue training from national awarding bodies like FAA and RLSS.

Teacher Training

“…we are not convinced that initial teacher training does a good enough job in terms of giving trainee teachers the confidence they need to take their pupils out of the classroom…”

Land & Wave are developing a new QCF Level 2 qualification (CPD points!) in school trip planning for schools and teachers which can be provided, for free, in your school to give teachers the skills and confidence for you to take students out of the classroom.

Land & Wave offers a full-time, dedicated team of experienced school trip managers and administrators available by phone and email all year round.

We’ll even arrange your pre-trip site visits. If you are coming from a distance, we’ll put you up for the night in a classy Swanage B&B.

Land & Wave offers FREE teacher weekends throughout the year, where teachers can visit for the weekend, staying in our accommodation, eating from our canteen and trying all the activities.

Schools

Land & Wave can meet almost any curriculum requirements and learning outcomes, see our blog which discusses Ofsted’s support for Learning Outside the Classroom.

Dorset based adventure residentials tick off skills which can be difficult to achieve in the classroom; self-confidence, motivation, environmental awareness, self-awareness, learning a new skill, independence, social skills, teamwork, resilience, challenge and risk, communication and leading and supporting.

Cost

It is important to give every child the opportunity to excel inside and outside the classroom and most schools don’t know they can use pupil premium to fund either entire trips or alternatively fund those children who would not otherwise afford it, see our blog on using Pupil Premium to support Learning Outside the Classroom.

Land & Wave offer flexible payment terms, allowing parents to pay monthly to the school.

Land & Wave has managed to keep prices consistent for years, whilst other residential provider’s costs have skyrocketed.

The company is bucking the national trend and growing in popularity as schools reconsider their 3 day residentials elsewhere for a 5 day adventure residential in Swanage.

Lack of trip operators

Land & Wave provide residentials to schools in Derby, Cambridgeshire, East Anglia, inner/ outer London, Northamptonshire alongside loads of more local schools.

Our most distant adventure residential client is located 220 miles away. We asked them why they drove so far, they told us – “why would we go anywhere else?”

If in doubt Land & Wave can put you in touch with transport partners. More and more of our schools are choosing to get the train to Wareham where we collect them in minibuses.
