Week 8: Climbing, Canoeing, Safety and Rescue: Outdoor Instructor Training 2016/17

Now our trainees have gained solid paddle skills, the focus has shifted to the coaching side of things and being able to lead groups.

Land & Wave Outdoor Instructor Training – Climbing, Canoeing and FRST

After a well earned break, our trainees returned raring (after a coffee or two) to go, pumped for the final 7 weeks of the Outdoor Instructor Training Course.

Here’s how their week panned out…

Climbing – Single Pitch Award (SPA) Pre-Training

The group has been building on their skills in preparation for SPA training, making the most of Dorset’s amazing natural playground. We’re privileged that Dorset is one of the UK’s top outdoor activity locations in the UK and provides ideal conditions for people new to climbing.

This week, the trainees were coached by Will Moy from Freeborn Climbing. In order premier-pharmacy.com to prepare for SPA Training, you must log 15 ‘Trad’ climbs. Everyone stepped up a level, practising their lead climbing and placing gear without the support of a top rope.

The group will continue logging climbs and perfecting their skills to help them get ready for SPA Training. With only 7 weeks to go, it’s going to be an action-packed time for them all. We’re looking forward to where the next climbing adventure will take us.

Canoeing – BCU – Level 1 Coach

We’ve had an amazing week getting reunited with the water; coasteering, kayaking, canoeing and splashing about. We’ve been focusing on the British Canoe Union (BCU) Level 1 Coaching AwardDarren Joy from Fluid Skills has been coaching the guys, working towards passing the award.

Now our trainees have gained solid paddle skills, the focus has shifted to the coaching side of things and being able to lead groups. Everyone performed really well during the week and is well on track to passing the canoeing award, getting yet another qualification under their belt.

FSRT – Foundation, Safety & Rescue Training

Prior to completing the BCU Level 1 Coach, everyone must pass their FSRT, Foundation, Safety & Rescue Training – a vital addition to any outdoor instructor’s ticket list. The course provides trainees with key safety and rescue skills for any common emergencies on the water.  We headed back to Buddens Lake in Wareham to practise the skills they need for the qualification.

We’ll keep you posted and let you know when they’ve all passed!

Also this week…

We also managed to squeeze some other activities in; coasteering, raft building, team building, pioneering and a navigational walking expedition! Check out the videos from this weeks Instagram stories to see what they got up to on their other adventures.

Follow us on Instagram and Twitter to see daily updates from the trainees. We’d love to see your adventures too, so if you’re out and about next week, be sure to let us know and share your pictures.
