- Coasteering – NCC Guide
- First Aid – Outdoor Level 3
Foundation, Safety & Rescue Training – FSRT
Last week the gang started on their FSRT training with Darren from Fluid Skills. This week the second half of the group got to grips with cold water and we’re very happy to announce that EVERYONE PASSED. That means all our trainees have all completed #5 on the qualifications list (so far).
A big thank you to Darren, it’s been great seeing everyone progress and watch them develop their skills for the FSRT. The qualification is a vital addition to any outdoor instructor’s skill set, covering a variety of knowledge and techniques; water safety, bank based rescue, boat based rescue and all kinds of scenarios.
Navigation : South West Coastal & Countryside
Half of the group successfully passed their South West Mountain & Moorland – Coastal & Countryside.
Our brave bunch of trainees headed out overnight on Monday and, luckily, were treated to a dry night. Everyone successfully planned routes and met at check points along the way, finishing off their routes on Tuesday.
The next navigational challenge will be next week, they will be externally assessed to become Duke of Edinburgh supervisors. Another vital part of an outdoor instructors qualifications and a great one to have as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gets more popular every year.
First Aid – Outdoor Level 3
Last year our very own Sophie Tanner became a qualified First Aid trainer.
First Aid is absolutely crucial for an outdoor instructor but also a great life skill for everyone and we can’t recommend enough for everyone to get some training in if you get the chance.
What Else…
Climbing and Coasteering training – logging more climbing routes and time in the water. The water conditions were some of the biggest we’ve experienced this week and even the instructors came back with wide eyes and tales of huge waves. We’re pleased to report that climbing training is coming along nicely, getting ready for a big week away on Dartmoor to really put their skills to the test.
What’s next…
We’re fast approaching the end of the course so there is LOTS going on in the next few weeks. We’re headed to Dartmoor for a week on the 23rd January, before that they’ll be camping, canoeing, raft building, kayaking along with lots more walking.
Stay tuned to see how the gang gets on and for more qualifications completed.
