Fun for kids this weekend

In part 1 of our 'Family Friendly Ideas to do in the Great Outdoors', we try out some kid-friendly, dog-friendly electric bike hire in the New Forest.

Our go-to list of family-friendly ideas to do in the great outdoors and easy ways to find fun for kids this weekend.

Ever feel the pressure to deliver a crowd-pleasing weekend activities for the kids and adults in your crew? Given the choice, my child would opt for the iPad and my other half would happily retreat to the shed. Hardly a picture of fun-filled family bonding in the great outdoors.

Electric Bike Hire

Electric bikes are really having a moment right now. They’re raging in popularity across mountainous European resorts such as the Alps and the Pyrenees during Summer months. It’s turned them from a fuddy-duddy fad, to a pretty splendid travel option and they’re becoming readily-available to hire across the UK.

Where to hire?

The Woods Cyclery

56 High St, Lyndhurst,

Hampshire, SO43 7BG

We couldn’t recommend these guys more highly. Amazing customer service and a swift hire and return process.

Where to ride?

We used this handy New Forest Website to plan our route for the day. They have brilliant ‘Family Route’ suggestions for safe, gentle rides. Lyndhurst to Brockenhurst is 10.9 miles of mostly off-road riding. You can download maps HERE. There are heaps of places to hop off the bikes, explore the forest and have a play.

Electric bikes really make light work of every incline and gravel track, with a ‘Turbo’ setting to really help you power through the forest. Even towing a bike trailer with a lump of of a Labrador in the back was an absolute breeze.

Where to stop?

On your return, take a quick detour to the Oak Inn near Lyndhurst. It’s tucked away down a country lane and is the perfect cosy pub to grab lunch and a pint. Booking is recommended. There’s a great wooded area opposite, which is perfect for exploring and tree climbing.

What to pack?

Comfy layers are a must. I always pack a tonne of snacks and a drinks bottle for my ravenous six-year-old. If your kids are riding out back in a bike trailer, then a comfy blanket is a good idea for the Autumn / Winter months.
